Let’s start off at the University of Birmingham in England, one of the founding members of the Russell Group (who you can read about in our article “ Should I study at a Russell Group University? “).

Their Masters in Advanced Engineering and Project Management is one of five pathways at Birmingham University. Instead of Project Management, the four other pathways offer construction management, operations management, systems management, or general.

We really like how this variety of options allows you to specialise in an area which best suits your skills, ambitions and interests. The delivery of this masters programme is by both the School of Engineering (of course) and the triple-crown accredited Birmingham Business School.

Over in Wales, Swansea University offers a really top Masters in Engineering Management, which is co-delivered by the university’s School of Engineering and the School of Management.

We like that there’s a really great range of modules covered during this programme, from Leadership and Complexity Management, to the Circular Economy and Sustainable Engineering, as well as Smart Manufacturing, Project Management and Asset Management.

Manchester is one of the most popular study destinations in the UK, for British people and international students alike. Over at Manchester Metropolitan University, the Engineering Project Management Masters is worth looking into.

It’s a very present-and-future-focused programme, with lots of time spent studying smart systems technology and systems engineering, as well as the latest leadership and management best practices.

But the thing we like the most about this programme is the option for a placement year out in the working world. This is great as you can get tonnes of experience, and it’ll look really good on your CV too!

Duration: 1 year

Time to head over the Atlantic to the USA to take a peek at the University of Illinois’ Civil Engineering Masters. Obviously, this one’s exclusively for the would-be civil engineers!

One amazing (though non-academic reason) to check out this programme is that you’ll get to live in Chicago, one of the coolest cities in the world! Plus, UIC is the biggest college in the area with over 30,000 students!

But what about the masters programme? It’s great. Students are able to focus their study in a specialised area according to their interests. Choose between: environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering and structural mechanics, and transportation engineering.

On top of this range of choice, we like the fact that you can choose between a coursework only option, and a thesis-based option to complete your degree.

The prestigious University of Bath might be one of the most beautiful places to study in the UK, with the Georgian architecture of the campus and it’s stunning countryside surroundings.

On top of this, it’s also one of the best universities for an Engineering Management Masters as it offers a perfectly balanced and comprehensive degree designed to turn you into both a leader and a do-er.

The main focus of the course is to learn the management skills required to succeed in an engineering context, exploring new technologies and their impact on the industry.

There are modules in business analysis, product development and supply chain management, as well as strategy, project management, operations and finance.

Duration: 2 years

The only definite two year course on this list, this quite unique Masters was designed in a collaboration between the University of Strathclyde and the celebrated Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The result of this is that you’ll emerge with a dual degree from both universities!

So what else makes it unique? Well, the first year takes place in Carnegie Mellon’s remote campus in the home of tech ventures — Silicon Valley in San Francisco. The summer semester includes an internship at one of the thousands of local tech innovator companies. Then for the second year, it’s over to Scotland to take a deep dive into the nuts and bolts of the industry.

During your time studying this Masters, you’ll have the chance to study a whole range of compulsory and elective modules, from systems thinking and modelling, engineering risk management, to sustainable product design and knowledge and information management for engineers.

So now that we’ve run through some of the best universities for a Masters in Engineering Management, maybe it’s time for you to start looking for the perfect place to study abroad.
